Cannabis (Miishkoonhs)

Introduction

The federal government maintains a list of licensed cultivators, processors, and sellers of cannabis under the Cannabis Act, many of whom will sell seeds to provincially authorized distributors/retailers and/or registered patients.

Industrial Hemp

Industrial hemp crops can only be grown from varieties approved by Health Canada. Although there are many listed, most are not grown in Canada. Seed suppliers with available seeds are located in western Canada and eastern Ontario.

A former Research Technician at the New Liskeard Research Station (NLARS) shared the following a few years ago:

The hemp variety developed at NLARS is called CANMA. CANMA is a grain variety – not a fiber – about 4-6 feet in height. Tall varieties (dual purpose) are difficult to combine.

This year we seeded at 28″ rows (in previous years we’ve used 21″ rows). A farmer can still elect to solid seed. Solid seeding gives good weed control. Rows are preferred, because they help during combining with less wrapping on the end of the combine header. Wide rows make it very easy to use a larger tractor to cultivate for mechanical weed control. Limit nitrogen to avoid plants that grow too tall. Short plants are very easier to combine. Cut at 2 feet from the ground. The short fibers will not wrap on the threshing cylinder.
Fertilizer: 55N (actual N) kg/ha
Seeding rate: 0.5g/m² (5kg/ha)
Grain Yield: 1000-1500 kg/ha
