Aquaponics ( Nbiing ktigeng )

Aquaponics ( Nbiing ktigeng )

Aquaponics refers to a food production system that couples aquaculture (growing fish in tanks) with hydroponics (growing plants in water). The process uses nitrifying bacteria to convert ammonia from the excretion of fish to nitrates. The advent of hydroponics has changed the way farming is happening in Ontario. The main benefit of hydroponics is that growers can grow almost anything, anywhere. Crops can include greens, herbs and flowering and fruiting plants such as strawberries and tomatoes. Different crop varieties and techniques require different harvesting methods.

The Anishinabek Nation has invited the hydroponic company Ripple Farms to present at a prior Round Table Information Session. Another company conducting aquaponics sales in Ontario is Zipgrow. For aquaponics presentations, please visit the Aquaculture section.
